About Our Deaf Interpreter Services
All of our interpreters are certified and qualified, and have undergone specialized training to have the skills, terminology, and knowledge required for the specific interpreting assignment. All interpreters undergo background investigation checks. We provide deaf interpreter services with all levels of certifications available in ASL.
The interpreter is there to ensure that both the hearing consumer as well as the deaf consumer needs are met. Interpreters work using American Sign Language (ASL) or English transliteration (interpreting speech literally using grammatical word order).
Sign language and oral interpreters bridge the communication gap between those who can hear and those who cannot. Sign language interpreters use their hands to translate spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL). These signs are understood by the deaf person, who then signs in return for the interpreter to speak aloud to the hearing audience. Oral interpreters use silent lip movements to represent spoken words. Many deaf or partially deaf people prefer lipreading. Sign language interpreters using the sign-to-voice method may lip-read at the same time. Interpreters must be able to change the mode of communication to fit the needs of the individuals being served.
Interpreters strive to make the communication as clear as possible for both hearing and nonhearing persons. They must convey thoughts and feelings as accurately as possible and never impose their own ideas. Interpreters relay information; they do not initiate or change it.
